It’s all about the glitz, the glamour and the gallivanting at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia and this year the Momento team took Sydney’s biggest fashion event by storm! The annual event that is located at the rustic-chic venue Carriageworks, was overflowing with A-listers, innovative designs and highly coveted street style.

Clad in our favourite designers and rubbing shoulders with Australian and International fashion heavy weights, the Momento girls were front and centre for the likes of KitX, Ginger & Smart, We Are Kindred, C/MEO Collective, Sass & Bide and more.

This year among the crowd we saw a lot of black and white, as per usual, but this time in checkered prints. Many opted for layered looks with collared shirts under fitted bodices. Embellishments were also big, along with pant suits and metallic boots. Trainers and biker jackets were also a go-to look for bloggers, particularly paired with floaty bottoms and frills.

On the catwalks we saw a range of trends new and old, with many exciting pieces to come from our much loved designers.

Firstly, we kicked off the week with Sass & Bide, which saw its trademark angular cuts paired with fringe, metallics, and black and white stripes. The luxe brand famous for its signature embellishments splashed hues of cobalt and scarlet between its elaborately cut neutrals and flirted with cheeky cutouts. The show was nothing short of visual delight as the Sass & Bide Army strutted a square shaped catwalk that wrapped around a sea of artistic lantern style light displays. Keep your eyes peeled in our new arrivals for Sass and Bide making a reappearance in Momento later this year.

On Tuesday we saw dynamic duo Bec & Bridge’s Resort 18 Collection that exuded their chic and sexy signature look of contoured lines and sleek silhouettes. Dramatic sleeves were a favourite along with equally flamboyant frills and structured blazers. Once again shades of blue were implemented through an array of bold black and whites. Polka dots and leather were also channeled, lending a youthful touch to a strong and sophisticated look.

Bright and early Wednesday morning the Momento girls met at the steps of the Art Gallery of NSW to view the latest collection from cool and confident label Ginger & Smart. The catwalk weaved through the floor in a snake-like shape while guests sat up close and personal to the models that emerged from a quirky geometric art inspired set. The designers showcased their skills in contrasting colours and textures alike, pairing bold colours with soft cuts and vice versa. This year Ginger & Smart dared to indulge with dramatic shapes and executed this incredibly well. With floating hemlines and off-the-shoulder necklines making an appearance, this collection definitely has something for everyone whether it be your soft and subtle classic look or your dare to dabble in colour and print style.

A trip back to Carriageworks led us to the We Are Kindred show, a label built on effortless modern luxury with a bohemian twist. Filled to the brim with fluid fabrics and soft pastels, We Are Kindred exceeded expectations, bringing a new mango hue to its frilly apparel. Lace and florals are no strangers to sister designers Lizzie and Georgie Renkert, but the Resort 18 collection leans towards a Cuban inspired theme. Jumping from white lace and embroidery to dark romantic pieces for a sexy feminine aesthetic. This collection will be extremely versatile as it can be worn in a number of ways. We can picture these flirty frills paired back with denim on hazy afternoons in the sun or dolled up makes for a sexy enchantress style evening look. Very excited for this one to land in store!

A quick stop at the luxurious Star Lounge for a refreshment and recharge winded up with the Momento girls rubbing shoulders with style icon Sarah Jane Adams of Saramai Jewels and Insta babes Cartia Mallan and Sammy Robinson. Down to earth and charismatic, these A-listers were a delight to be around and chatted with us about the world of fashion, the media, and shared tips and tricks to conquering Fashion Week. They even posed for a cheeky snap before ducking off to the C/MEO Collective show.

C/MEO Collective pieced together a frenzy of easy-to-wear fashion. This collection ranged from crisp whites, where again we saw the polka dot trend resurface, to black and silver metallic, to khaki greens with tropical inspired florals, and then to bright yellows and reds. The smooth transitions between such a wide array of looks was strategically implemented throughout a figure 8 catwalk where front rowers sat in intimate circles amidst the action. C/MEO’s signature ruffle neckline and sleeve were not neglected, as playful mini dresses and jagged hemlines took their place on the runway, as did sequin embellishments – a relatively new territory for the label. This collection will have you sorted from corporate chic, to brunch attire, to the most elegant of evening wear. Stay tuned!

Winding down and waiting for a big finale, the Momento girls had some fun and caught The Innovators Show produced by prestigious design institute Fashion Design Studio, which was home to graduates Dion Lee and Zimmerman. We watched as young and upcoming designers such as Richard Giang, Ewol, Casea and more pushed fashion boundaries and showcased their incredible creative flair. With modern music choices and edgy light shows, The Innovators were fun to watch and aesthetically pleasing for contemporary fashion enthusiasts. Needless to say, Australia’s fashion future is in great hands!

Finally we arrived at the event on everyone’s lips, the final show of the night. Australian label of the moment KITX has recently been seen on celebs such as Emma Watson, Karlie Kloss, and Jesinta Campbell and we can see why. This ethically sourced label combines superior quality with creative contemporary design and was launched in 2015 by founder Kit Willow. Originally beginning as a capsule lingerie collection, Willow has gone above and beyond to turn her designs into an elite and well-respected label that is applauded for consciously sourcing environmentally friendly materials. The expectations were high for this “sophisticated meets cool girl” inspired label and they were of course exceeded. Beginning the show with an incredible strobe-like light show, models emerged from a grungy cage inspired set giving it a bad-ass ambience right off the bat. Props and accessories were minimal as the striking garments lit the runway. Plenty of black surfaced including mesh, a trend we’ve seen much of recently. Some designs featured slogan prints reading “Truth” and “Rights of nature,” relating back to the brand’s environmental values. We also saw a lot of cinched in waists with draped detailing which is exciting for those of us craving some curve flattering pieces. It seems buttercup, scarlet and coblat are the colours of choice next season with KITX also opting for these primary hues. Gold fringe adorned structured vests and sleeves were dramatized whether they be short, long, one shoulder, or cape style. KITX definitely knows how to gather material in all the right places for maximum high fashion impact and we loved every second. The high voltage aesthetic of KITX was indeed a well anticipated fashion week favourite and many praised the designer for her incredible efforts. A huge congratulations from us at the Momento team to Kit Willow on her brilliant execution and amazing collection. Our head honcho Ros shared post show chit chat with Kelly Hush from Harper’s Bazaar, who had nothing but compliments on the amazing work Willow has produced. Glynis Trail- Nash commented that KITX is “proof that ethical and sustainable need not be ugly.”
